Earth is where most portable fences fail. The energizer is fine, the wire is fine, and the fence still reads low, because the whole circuit depends on current getting back through the soil to the ground rod and a screwdriver pushed into dry dirt will not do it. This is a 760 mm (30 inch) galvanised steel rod with a 150 mm (6 inch) T-handle across the top and a tapered point, so it drives by hand and pulls back out without a bar. Speedrite lists it as SA111, product code 880 0003-478, and specifies it for temporary fencing that gets repositioned frequently, for integrated solar energizers, and for units rated 0.5 joules or less. That rating is the part to pay attention to. A single 30 inch rod is not an earth system for a mains energizer. Speedrite calls for around 2.7 m (9 feet) of rod on a 3 joule unit and 5.5 m (18 feet) on a 6 joule unit, so this rod belongs at the small, movable end of the range. Drive it into damp ground rather than a dry knoll, and where the soil is sandy or frozen, pour water around it. On dry country, expect to move the rod to the wettest ground you can reach rather than expecting one stake to do more than it can.
