A spring gate is a coiled steel gate that tensions across an opening and contracts back to a fraction of its length when you unhook it. This kit covers openings up to 24 feet and comes with the ends needed to install it. The virtue is that there is nothing to drag and nothing to leave open. Unhook it, it pulls back to the post out of the way, and there is no gate lying in the mud collecting snow. For a field opening that gets used with a tractor or a truck through the season, it is much less bother than a handle and a run of polywire. A couple of things to know. The spring is under real tension when stretched, so hook and unhook it deliberately and never let it go from full stretch, because that is how people get hurt. It also needs a solid, well-braced post at each end, since the spring is pulling on them constantly. And in winter, expect a spring gate to collect a drift. If the opening has to stay usable through February, keep it well off the ground and plan on clearing it.
