Speedrite lightning diverter

Details

A lightning diverter is fitted in the fence line between the energizer and the fence, with its own ground rod. When a strike or an induced surge travels down the wire, the diverter breaks over and dumps that energy into its own earth instead of letting it walk into the energizer output. It needs its own ground system to work. A diverter wired to the energizer ground, or to no ground at all, is decoration. Drive a dedicated rod for it, well away from the main energizer ground bed, and keep the connection short and heavy. Open pasture across the prairies is exactly the terrain lightning finds, and a mile of wire on wooden posts makes an excellent aerial. Losing an energizer to a strike is a several hundred dollar lesson and often comes with a stretch of dead fence at the worst time of year. A diverter and a proper ground bed together are the cheap version of that insurance, and they work alongside the internal lightning rod rather than instead of it.
