A compression spring sits in the fence line and does two jobs. It holds tension as the wire expands and contracts, and it gives the fence somewhere to go when something hits it. Without one, the load from an elk going through or a heavy wet snow on the bottom wire lands straight on the posts and the joints. Temperature swing is the quiet one. High tensile wire noticeably lengthens in summer heat and shortens hard in a cold snap, and a fence strained tight in August can be pulled to breaking point in January. A spring absorbs that movement so the wire stays working rather than either sagging or snapping. The heavy duty nine inch spring suits longer runs and heavier wire where a light spring would be fully compressed and doing nothing. Many people also use the coils as a rough tension gauge. Set it so there is compression left in reserve, and you can see at a glance in the winter whether the line is over-tightened. One per long run, at the end nearest the strainer, is the usual arrangement.
