Speedrite ground rod, 6' x 1/2" galvanized (10 pack)
Ten galvanized ground rods, six feet by half an inch, for building the earth system that lets a big energizer actually deliver its shock.
Details
Grounding is what makes or breaks a big energizer in dry or frozen soil. The energizer can only push as much current through the animal as the earth system can collect on the way back, and on prairie ground that freezes to depth every winter, an undersized ground bed is the single most common reason a fence that tested fine in July stops working in January. These are six foot galvanized rods, half inch diameter, sold ten to a bundle. Galvanizing matters. A rusted rod loses contact with the soil, and mild steel in wet alkaline ground will not last. Drive them at least three metres apart, in the dampest ground you have access to, and link them with proper ground clamps and a continuous run of heavy wire rather than a series of twists. Put in more ground rod than you think you need. A three joule unit wants a bare minimum of three rods, and a large energizer wants considerably more. Then check fence voltage at the far end, not just at the terminals, and check it again in February when the frost is deepest. That is the reading that tells you whether your ground bed is honest.
