A voltmeter tells you the fence is down. A fault finder tells you which way to walk. This one reads voltage, current and current direction at the same time on a large back-lit display, and it keeps previous readings on screen so you can compare as you move along the line. The method is simple. Take a reading, note the direction the current is flowing, and follow it. At each branch, read again and take whichever leg is drawing the current. You end up at the fault instead of walking the whole system twice. It has an audible indicator for current detection, automatic polarity detection so it works with any energizer, a water-resistant rugged case, a belt clip, and a replaceable 9V battery with a low-battery warning. On a big system in this country that saves real time. When a wind takes a poplar branch onto the line, or snow drifts up onto the bottom wire in a coulee half a mile from the road, walking the fence in January to find it is a long, cold day. The back-lit display is not a gimmick either — a lot of fence troubleshooting happens at dusk or in a snowstorm when a plain LCD is unreadable. Pair it with cut-out switches and most faults become a fifteen-minute job.
