Working single-handed in a pen of pigs, a tube is one more thing to get stood on. The bottle-mount build of the VS injector puts the bottle on the gun itself, so the whole outfit moves as one piece and there is nothing behind you to catch. The kit comes with a 25 mm (1 in) lockable needle guard, which is the part that distinguishes the VS from a plain injector. It locks over the needle between animals, cutting down both accidental needle-sticks and needles snapped off against a moving animal. The handle is the reusable modular one common to the whole VS range, taking dose chambers of 0.5, 1, 2 and 5 mL sold separately, so the same handle can be re-chambered as protocols change rather than replaced. Keep the bottle collar tight and check it as the day warms up. The guard mechanism needs to stay free of dried product to keep locking cleanly, so flush it along with the barrel and let everything dry apart. Valve kits, ink stamps and coloured bands are all available for this handle. Ask your veterinarian which product and dose apply, and follow the label.
