Diatomaceous earth is a physical insecticide. The dust is abrasive at a microscopic scale and it strips the waxy layer that keeps an insect from drying out, so treated insects die of dehydration. Nothing about that mechanism can be resisted, and the dust keeps working as long as it stays dry and in place — which makes it useful in exactly the spots a spray fails: dry voids, under sinks, behind kickplates, along sill plates, in wall gaps. It handles crawling insects broadly — ants, earwigs, silverfish, sowbugs, spiders, cockroaches and similar — rather than flying pests, and it is slow by design. Insects need to walk through it and then take days to die, so if you are looking for something to drop a wasp out of the air, this is the wrong product. The aerosol delivery is a genuine improvement over loose dust. It places a thin, even film exactly where you point it, including into cracks you could never reach with a bulb duster. Resist the urge to lay it on thick: insects avoid visible piles of dust, so a light film in the right crack beats a heavy line across a floor. Keep it dry. Once diatomaceous earth gets wet it cakes and stops working, so it is a treatment for protected interior spaces rather than exposed exterior surfaces. Read the label for approved sites and uses. Wear a dust mask while applying, keep it out of your eyes, and ventilate the space. Keep the can away from heat and flame, store upright, and keep it out of reach of children.
