A bait gel works on the opposite principle from a spray. Instead of killing the ants you can see, it gets carried back to the nest and shared, which is the only way to deal with a colony you cannot find. Spraying a trail kills foragers and leaves the queen producing more; baiting takes longer to look like it is working and then the problem actually stops. Placement is everything. Put small dots of gel directly on the trails you have observed, along baseboards, under sinks, at the back of cupboards, in the cracks where you see them coming and going — not out in the middle of a floor. Use several small placements rather than one big blob; ants recruit to a food source and you want plenty of access. Then leave it alone. The hardest part of baiting is resisting the urge to wipe up the ants crowding around it, because that crowd is the product working. Do not spray insecticide anywhere near your bait placements. Residual sprays repel ants, and a repelled ant does not feed. If you have been spraying, expect a delay before baiting takes hold. This is a registered pesticide, so read and follow the label for where it may be used, which species it covers, and its cautions. Place gel where children and pets cannot reach it — behind and under things, in cracks and voids, not on open surfaces. Two syringes is enough for a thorough job in a house, and gel dries out over time, so refresh placements that have gone hard and check back in a couple of weeks. If the ants are carpenter ants in structural wood, that is a different problem worth a professional's look.
