The whole argument for top fill is that you never have to flip a full fountain over. On a conventional double wall fountain you fill the reservoir, screw the trough on, and turn the thing upside down, wearing some part of it every time. Here you set it where it lives, run the hose in the top, and screw the cap down. Once the cap is sealed it works like any vacuum fountain. Water feeds down into the trough and holds a steady level as birds drink, with no float or valve involved. Three gallons suits a small to mid size flock. At that size you could manage either design, so this comes down to whether you would rather pay a little more and stop wrestling with it every morning. The cap has to seal for it to work at all. Cap, handle, plug and o-ring are all available separately, which is worth knowing because those are the parts that eventually go rather than the fountain itself.
