Details
A tag applicator is one of those tools where buying the decent one pays you back in tags that stay in. This is a universal pattern for two-piece tags, so it handles the common brands rather than tying you to one supplier for the working life of the herd. The job it does is simple and unforgiving. Line the button up with the panel, put the pin through the right part of the ear, and close it in one clean motion. Hesitate, or work with a dull pin, and you get a torn hole that lets go on a wire fence six months later. The pin is a replaceable wear part, which is what makes an applicator worth maintaining instead of replacing. Keep it clean. Manure and dried blood in the jaws stop the button seating properly. Wipe it down between groups, disinfect between herds, check the pin before every tagging day, and keep a spare pin with the tool. Store it inside where the spring stays lively, not in a truck box through a winter.
