Aluminum hub needles are the everyday needle for cattle work. The aluminum hub is stiffer than a plastic one and easier to grip with a glove on, and a box of a hundred is the sensible way to buy when you are running a whole herd through the chute. Needles are the last place to be frugal. A dull or bent needle tears tissue and makes the animal move at exactly the wrong moment. Change them often through a run, and change one immediately if it bends or catches a rail. Working out of an open box beside the chute, rather than using the same needle all afternoon, is cheap insurance on carcass quality and on how the next hundred head behave in the alley. Gauge and length depend on the product, the route and the size of the animal, and that comes off the label or from your veterinarian rather than from a guess. Keep needles clean, dry and in the box. Have a proper sharps container at the chute, and never leave used needles loose in a bucket or a coat pocket.
