Details
A nose weaner takes the nursing out of weaning without taking the cow away. It sits in the nose of the calf and the inward-facing spikes discourage the cow from standing to let it suck, while the calf still grazes and drinks normally. The pairs stay together, which is the whole idea, and by the time you separate them the calf has already learned to make a living off grass and feed. Fifty to a bag is a herd quantity. If you are running a decent bunch through the chute in the fall you want to fit the whole group in one pass rather than in dribs and drabs, and you want a few spares, because some always turn up in the bush. Fit is the whole game with these. A loose one gets lost and a tight one causes trouble, so take the minute to seat each one properly and walk the group a day or two later to see what has come out. How long they stay in and how the weaning is staged is worth a conversation with your veterinarian and worth reading against the Codes of Practice. Wash and inspect any you plan to reuse.
