Two-piece tags are the standard for management tagging. The male button goes through from the back of the ear and locks into the female panel on the front, and applied with a proper applicator and a sharp pin they seat cleanly and hold. Large is the size for mature cattle and for anywhere the number has to be read at a distance, which in practice means across a pasture, down a feed alley, or from the seat of a truck. A tag you cannot read from thirty feet away costs you a little time every day of the year. Number them ahead of time with a real tag marking pen and let the ink cure before you bag them. Check the applicator pin before you start, because a dull pin makes a ragged hole and a ragged hole is what tears out on a wire later. Store tags out of direct sun. UV is what makes plastic brittle, and a bag that spent a summer on the dash of the truck will not apply the way it should the following spring.
