Details
The pin is the part that does the work and the part that wears out. It punches through the ear and carries the button into the panel, and once it dulls or bends, every tag after that goes in ragged. Ragged holes are what tear out on a fence six months later, so a pin is not a part worth running past its life. Keep at least one spare with the applicator itself, not in a drawer at the shop. The moment you notice tags going in hard is the moment you want the new pin in your hand, and that moment always arrives on a cold morning with the whole calf crop still to do. Change it with the applicator clean and dry, and follow the instructions rather than forcing anything. Wipe the pin and the jaws between groups, and disinfect if you are moving between herds. Store the applicator with the pin protected instead of loose in a bucket of tags where it gets knocked about. A sharp pin, a properly numbered tag and a bit of care make tagging a quick job.
