A useful middle size. Three quarters of an inch at 18 gauge is short enough to stay shallow on cattle and long enough to be more than a skin needle on sheep and goats, and the finer bore leaves less behind than a 16 does. Mixed operations tend to keep a box of this size simply because it covers a lot of different animals. In the D3 build it carries a thick-wall cannula and a precision-ground tip to resist breaking, with the whole design aimed at being detectable by x-ray or magnetic technology at plant line speed if a piece ever does come off. The brass hub has the gauge stamped into the metal. Red cartridges, ISO colour-coded tamper-evident seals, disposable, 100 per box. The trap with a general-purpose size is assuming it covers everything. On a heavy mature cow it is usually both too fine and too short at once. Pick for the animal in the chute, change needles regularly through a group, use a sharps container, and count them in and out.
