Five eighths of an inch is about as short as a practical cattle needle gets. It is built for shallow work where the point needs to stay in the layer just under the hide, on calves and lighter cattle rather than grown cows. The 16 gauge bore keeps the fluid moving so the short length does not slow you down. The cannula is regular-wall stainless with a computer-ground, tri-bevelled anti-coring tip and an anti-friction coating. The hub is aluminum, colour coded to ISO gauge standards, and the cartridge is tamper evident. Sterile and single use. At branding or on a calf table these are the ones that disappear fastest, and a hundred to the box is about right for a morning. Short needles bend less and break less, but they still lose their edge, and a blunt point on a squirming calf makes a mess of a clean job. Change them regularly, keep a sharps container on the trailer rather than a coffee can, and take route and dosing questions to your veterinarian or the label.
