Details
Eighteen gauge is a finer needle than the 16 most people default to. It puts a smaller hole in the animal and pulls less tissue with it, which suits lighter cattle, calves and thinner-bodied fluids. The trade is speed and stiffness: thick fluid pushes hard through an 18, and the shaft flexes more than a 16 does when a big animal moves. Ideal builds it on a regular-wall stainless cannula with a tri-bevelled, anti-coring tip that is computer ground for a consistent point, in an ISO colour-coded aluminum hub. Tamper-evident cartridge, sterile, single use, 100 per box. At one inch this is a general-purpose size for smaller stock and light cattle. Where it goes wrong is in a rank mature cow: use a finer needle than the animal warrants and you will straighten a few and break the odd one. Match the needle to the cattle in front of you, change them through the run, and put every used one in a sharps container. Route, site and product questions belong with your veterinarian.
