Eighteen gauge puts a smaller hole in the animal than the 16 most people default to, at the cost of speed with anything thick. At one inch it is a general-purpose size for lighter cattle and smaller stock. Being finer, it is also more prone to flexing, which is a fair reason to want it in a detectable build. The D3 runs a thick-wall cannula and a precision-ground tip specifically to cut breakage, and if a piece does come off it is designed to be caught by x-ray or magnetic detection at line speed. The brass hub has the gauge stamped into it, and the packaging is red with ISO colour-coded, tamper-evident seals. Disposable, 100 per box. Match the needle to the animal. Running an 18 into mature cows because it is what was open is how you end up straightening shafts and losing points. Keep the box near the chute, change needles through the run rather than at the end, use a sharps container, and account for every one. Route, site and dose come from the product label or your veterinarian.
