Five eighths of an inch is a shallow needle with a full 16 gauge bore, which makes it a calf and light-cattle size that still moves fluid quickly. In the D3 build it also happens to be one of the toughest things in the box: short shaft, thick wall, very little to bend. Detectability is the point of the range. If a needle does break, it is designed to be identified by x-ray or magnetic detection at line speed rather than travelling on unnoticed. The hub is brass with the gauge stamped into the metal, and the needles ship in red cartridges with ISO colour-coded, tamper-evident seals so they never get mixed in with your standard stock. Branding and processing days are where these get used, often by whoever is on the far side of the table rather than the person who bought them. Put the box somewhere obvious, tell the crew to change needles rather than nurse them, and have a proper sharps container out instead of a bucket. Count what you took out and what you binned. Anything to do with what is being given is your veterinarian's call.
