The extra half inch over a one inch 16 is about reach on cattle carrying condition, where hide and cover sit deep enough that a shorter needle can stop before it gets where you meant it to. It is a mature cow size, and the longer shaft is also the part most likely to bend under load, which is the argument for taking it in the detectable version. D3 needles run a thick-wall cannula with a precision-ground tip to cut down on breakage, and if one does break the design is made to be picked up by x-ray or magnetic detection at line speed. The brass hub has the gauge stamped into the metal. Red cartridges, ISO colour-coded tamper-evident seals, disposable, 100 per box. Length is not free. The more shaft that is in the animal, the more a sudden move costs you. Have her properly caught and squeezed first, never carry on with a needle that has taken a set, and change them through the run.
