This is the size most outfits run day to day, in the detectable version. Sixteen gauge by one inch covers the bulk of mature beef cattle work, and moving it to a D3 costs you nothing in handling while adding a real safety net: the thick-wall cannula resists breaking, and a broken piece is designed to be detected by x-ray or magnetic technology at line speed. The hub is brass with the gauge stamped into it rather than printed on, which survives a season of being rattled around in a chute box. Red cartridges and ISO colour-coded, tamper-evident seals keep the detectable needles obviously separate from your standard stock. Disposable, 100 per box. If you are going to standardise on one detectable size, this is usually it. Keep the box where the crew can reach it so nobody nurses a dull needle through another twenty head, change them regularly, and use a sharps container rather than a pail. Count your needles in and out and follow your program's reporting procedure if one is unaccounted for. Talk to your veterinarian about anything you are administering.
