Short and fine. Five eighths of an inch on an 18 gauge is a small-animal and young-stock needle, meant to stay just under the hide on calves, lambs and kids without punching deeper than intended. It is not a needle for grown cattle and it will tell you so quickly if you try. The cannula is regular-wall stainless with a computer-ground, tri-bevelled anti-coring tip, set in an ISO colour-coded aluminum hub. Tamper-evident cartridge, sterile, one use only. The advantage of a short fine needle is control. On a lamb or a young calf held across your knee you can feel exactly where the point is, and there is very little shaft hanging out to catch on anything. The disadvantage is fragility: it dulls fast on tough skin and it will not tolerate being wiped off on a rail and reused. Buy them by the hundred so changing one is never a decision, keep a sharps container within reach, and leave product-specific advice to your veterinarian or the label.
