Details
Three quarter inch at 18 gauge is a compromise size, and a useful one. It is short enough to stay shallow on cattle, long enough to be more than a skin needle on sheep and goats, and fine enough that it does not leave much behind. A lot of mixed operations keep a box of these on hand simply because they cover a wide range of animals. Ideal grinds a tri-bevelled, anti-coring tip on a regular-wall stainless cannula and finishes it with an anti-friction coating so it slips in with less pressure. The aluminum hub is colour coded to ISO gauge standards and the cartridge is tamper evident. Sterile, single use, 100 to the box. Where a mid-size needle catches people out is assuming it will do everything. On a heavy mature cow it is often too fine and too short at once. Pick the size for the animal, change needles through a run rather than at the end of it, and use a sharps container. Anything about what you are giving is a conversation with your veterinarian.
