A commercial-strength residual surface spray at 0.5% permethrin — double the concentration of the household version, intended for treating surfaces rather than spraying insects directly. You apply it to the places insects travel and rest, it dries, and insects crossing that surface over the following weeks pick up a dose. That is a different way of thinking about insect control and a more effective one. Spraying insects you can see kills the ones you can see; treating a surface deals with the ones you cannot, including those emerging later or moving in from outside. Baseboards, cracks and crevices, door and window frames, wall-floor junctions, behind and under equipment, entry points — those are where a residual belongs. Read the label and follow it exactly. This is a commercial product; the label sets the registered sites and pests, the required protective equipment, ventilation and re-entry intervals, and whether a given site is permitted at all. Follow it. Two things that determine whether a residual works: surface and coverage. Porous surfaces absorb the product and shorten the residual, so unsealed concrete and bare wood need more frequent retreatment than painted trim. And it only works where you sprayed, so a careful crack-and-crevice application beats a fast pass over open wall. Permethrin is highly toxic to fish and notably toxic to cats, which are far more sensitive than dogs. Keep it away from aquariums and water, and keep cats off treated surfaces until fully dry. Wear gloves and eye protection, ventilate well, and store away from heat, flame and children.
