A general household and garden insecticide at 0.25% permethrin — the workhorse can that lives in the shop and gets used for whatever turns up. Permethrin is a synthetic pyrethroid with reasonable residual activity, so a treated surface keeps working after the spray dries rather than only killing what it lands on. Read the label first, every time. Which insects, which sites, indoors or out, on plants or only on structures, how long to keep people and pets away, and any interval before harvest if it is being used on food plants — all of it is on the label, and those are legal conditions of use. A can that covers both house and garden uses does not mean every use on it is permitted everywhere. Two things worth understanding about spraying insects generally. First, a broad-spectrum insecticide kills beneficial insects along with pests — the ladybugs, lacewings and parasitic wasps that were controlling your aphids, plus bees. Spray in the evening when pollinators are not flying, never spray a blooming plant, and treat the affected plant rather than the whole garden. Second, spraying without identifying the problem usually fails. Yellowing leaves are as often water, nutrition or disease as they are insects. Permethrin is highly toxic to fish and to cats, and cats are far more sensitive to it than dogs. Keep it away from ponds, aquariums and any water, and keep cats off treated surfaces until dry. Store it away from heat, sparks and open flame, out of the sun, and out of reach of children.
