Insecticide powder does a job liquids cannot. A dust blown into a wall void, a crack, the gap under a sill plate, a rodent burrow or a poultry house crevice stays in place dry for a long time and treats insects moving through it, where a spray wets the surface, dries and is largely done. For cracks, voids and inaccessible harbourages, dust is the right tool. The active here is pyrethrin, the plant-derived pyrethroid, which breaks down quickly in light and air but is much more persistent when it is out of the light inside a void — one reason a dust formulation makes sense with this particular active. Read the label and follow it. It lists the registered pests and sites, the application method, the protective equipment required, and any restrictions around food, feed and animals. Following the label is a legal requirement, not a recommendation. Two practical points. Apply lightly. The instinct is to lay down a visible layer, but insects avoid heavy deposits and walk around them; a barely visible film is what actually gets picked up. A hand duster or bulb applicator gives far better results than shaking it from the container. And keep it dry — dust that gets wet cakes and stops working entirely, so it is for dry voids and protected areas, not damp ones. Wear a mask or respirator as the label directs. Breathing any insecticide dust is worth avoiding, and a puff into a void will come back at you. Store it sealed and dry, away from feed, and out of reach of children and pets.
