Pyrethrin Powder in Canada: What the Go Green Label Allows

Will pyrethrin powder kill wasps? Can it go in the garden or on chickens? The Doktor Doom Go Green label (PCP 29759) answers each question, quoted here.

Doktor Doom Go Green Premium Pyrethrin Powder Insect Killer is a ready-to-use insecticide dust from 753146 Alberta Ltd. o/a Ultrasol Industries of Edmonton, registered with Health Canada as PCP Reg. No. 29759 in the DOMESTIC class. People search for it with the same few questions: will it kill wasps, can it go in the garden, can it go on chickens, and is it the same as permethrin. The registered label answers every one of them, so this guide quotes it.

Key takeaways from the label

  • It is registered "FOR INDOOR USE IN BUILDINGS". The label does not cover gardens, plants or outdoor use.
  • The insects it lists are ants, cockroaches, silverfish, spiders, crickets, earwigs, sowbugs, boxelder bugs, bed bugs and fleas. Wasps, hornets and bees are not on the list.
  • It is a crack and crevice, perimeter, spot or furniture treatment, not a broadcast treatment, and the rate is "DO NOT exceed 20 - 25 g per m2."
  • For fleas the label says "DO NOT DUST PETS WITH THIS PRODUCT."
  • The actives are pyrethrins and piperonyl butoxide. It is not a permethrin product.

What the label covers

The front panel reads: "For indoor use in buildings to kill ants, cockroaches, silverfish, spiders, crickets, earwigs, sowbugs, boxelder bugs, bed bugs and fleas". The guarantee is pyrethrins 0.2% and piperonyl butoxide 1.0%. The listing we carry is the 350 g bottle: Doktor Doom Go Green Premium Quality Pyrethrin Insecticide Powder, 350 g.

The directions repeat the scope: "Treatment must only be repeated after 7 days if pest problem persists or reoccurs." and "When applied indoors, good sanitary practices should be maintained to prevent re-infestation."

Can you use pyrethrin powder for wasps?

Not this one. Wasps and hornets are not among the insects the 29759 label lists, and the label is for indoor use in buildings only, so it is not labelled for wasp or hornet nests in soffits, eaves, sheds or the yard. The label also says "DO NOT apply to overhead areas or in confined spaces (e.g., attics, crawlspaces, small storage rooms, closets)."

For exposed wasp and hornet nests outdoors we list two products whose Health Canada labels name wasps and hornets: Ortho Wasp B Gon Max Wasp Killer Foam Aerosol 400 g (PCP 33724) and Ortho Wasp B Gon Max Wasp Killer Spray Aerosol 400 g (PCP 33723). Each product page quotes its own label.

Ants, cockroaches, spiders, crickets and the rest: how to apply it

The label sets four kinds of treatment: "Apply as a crack and crevice, perimeter, spot or furniture (pet bedding, mattresses, box springs and bed frames only) treatment only." It also says "DO NOT apply as a broadcast treatment."

For the crawling insects, the label says to "lightly coat indoor building surfaces, including cracks and crevices in walls, floors and ceilings; along and behind baseboards", behind and beneath appliances and furniture, around sinks, drains and pipes, around garbage cans and in electrical outlet boxes. The rate: "DO NOT exceed 20 - 25 g per m2."

The label defines a perimeter application as "less than 0.3 m wide along the edges of a room" and a spot application as "not more than 0.2 m2". Our guide to crickets in the garage or house compares this dust with the Ortho sprays whose labels list crickets.

Bed bugs

The bed bug directions start with what not to treat: "DO NOT use on items which can be laundered (e.g., pillows, bedding, toys, clothing, etc.)." Then: "Remove bedding before treating mattress." "Thoroughly dust both sides of mattress, particularly around tufts and seams." "Take bed apart and thoroughly dust the bed frame, springs and all joints." The same 20 - 25 g per m2 limit applies.

We also list two Ortho bed bug aerosols with their own labels: Ortho Bed Bug B Gon Max Bed Bug Killer Aerosol 400 g and Ortho Bed Bug B Gon Diatom Diatomaceous Earth Bed Bug Killer Aerosol 340 g. For Health Canada's bed bug advice and all three bed bug labels side by side, see Bed Bug Spray, Powder or Diatomaceous Earth? What Canadian Labels Allow.

Fleas, pets and chickens

For fleas the label says "DO NOT apply to furniture (with the exception of pet bedding), mattresses, linens, toys or clothing." and "Pet bedding may be entirely treated with this product or replaced with clean, fresh bedding after other listed areas are treated."

On the animals themselves it is direct: "DO NOT DUST PETS WITH THIS PRODUCT. Only treat pets with products specifically registered for use on that type of pet." The label does not list poultry or livestock anywhere, so it is not a product for dusting chickens.

Where the label says not to use it

  • Outdoors, in gardens or on plants: it is registered "FOR INDOOR USE IN BUILDINGS".
  • "DO NOT apply when people or pets are present."
  • "DO NOT allow people or pets to enter treated areas until dusts have settled."
  • "DO NOT apply to surfaces that may come into contact with food/feed." The label adds: "Cover or remove all food/feed."
  • "DO NOT allow dust to deposit onto non-target surfaces."

Pyrethrin or permethrin?

The two words get mixed up in searches. This powder's actives are pyrethrins at 0.2% and piperonyl butoxide at 1.0%; the label describes it as "made from an African flower (Chrysanthemum cinerariaefolium)". Permethrin is a different active ingredient with its own registrations; nothing on the 29759 label is permethrin. If a label you are reading lists permethrin, it is a different product and its own label sets its use.

Precautions, as printed

"KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN." "DO NOT use near fish ponds or aquariums." "Avoid inhalation of the dust." "Wash hands and other exposed skin after handling." The label's first-aid section covers swallowing, skin, inhalation and eye contact; take the container, label or product name and PCP number with you when seeking medical attention.
