This is not an insecticide, and that is the first thing to understand about it. The active is denatonium benzoate at 0.075%, the most bitter compound known, used at tiny concentrations to make things taste unbearable. Sprayed on trees, shrubs and plants, it stops the animals that chew them — and it works on taste alone, with nothing toxic involved. What it is for is the damage that shows up over a prairie winter and spring: rabbits and hares girdling young fruit trees and shrubs under the snow, deer browsing new growth, and, indoors or in a yard, a dog or a horse chewing on something it should not. It is also the same chemistry used to stop cribbing and bandage chewing. The limitation is honest and unavoidable: it works while it is on the plant. Rain, snowmelt and irrigation wash it off, and new growth is untreated by definition. That means reapplication through the season, and particularly after wet weather and after a flush of new growth. Somebody who sprays once in October and finds girdled bark in March has not been let down by the product. Read the label for which plants and sites it is registered for and whether it may be used on anything intended for eating. Do not apply it to fruit or vegetables you plan to harvest unless the label specifically permits it — bitterness does not wash off nearly as easily as you would hope. For rabbits on young trees, a plastic trunk guard or wire mesh does a more reliable job through a whole winter than any spray. Use both if the trees matter.
