Which Roundup Has Glyphosate? Roundup vs Roundup Advanced in Canada

Roundup is a brand, not one chemical: which Roundup products contain glyphosate, which don't, and what each Canadian label says on mixing and rain.

Which Roundup Has Glyphosate? Roundup vs Roundup Advanced in Canada

Roundup is a brand name, not a single chemical. The eleven Roundup products listed at Pipestone Farm Supply fall into two families: glyphosate products, and the Roundup Advanced line, which contains no glyphosate. This guide sorts them by what Health Canada's pesticide register lists for each registration (the PCP number, the active ingredient and its guarantee) and quotes the product labels on mixing, rain and replanting. All of them are registered as DOMESTIC products for home and garden use.

Which Roundup products contain glyphosate?

Eight of the eleven. Health Canada lists glyphosate as the only active ingredient in each of these:

  • Roundup Super Concentrate Non-Selective Herbicide 1L: PCP No. 22759, glyphosate 356 g/L. Product page
  • Roundup Concentrate Non-Selective Herbicide, 500 mL and 1 L: PCP No. 22627, glyphosate 143 g/L. 500 mL · 1 L
  • Roundup Ready-To-Use Tough Brush & Poison Ivy Control With Wand Applicator 4 L: PCP No. 31997, glyphosate 14.0 g/L. Product page
  • Roundup Ready-To-Use with Wand Applicator 4 L: PCP No. 31154, glyphosate 7.0 g/L, plus the 4 L refill for the same wand, also glyphosate at 7 g/L. Wand · Refill
  • Roundup Ready-To-Use Non-Selective Herbicide with FastAct Foam 1 L: PCP No. 22807, glyphosate 7 g/L. Product page
  • Roundup Ready-To-Use Grass And Weed Control with FastAct Foam 2 L: PCP No. 24299, glyphosate 7 g/L. Product page

Which Roundup does not contain glyphosate? Roundup Advanced

The three Roundup Advanced products use other active ingredients, and Health Canada's register lists no glyphosate in any of them:

  • Roundup Advanced Ready-To-Use Grass and Weed Control 1 L: PCP No. 27933, acetic acid 62.5 g/L. Product page
  • Roundup Advanced Ready-To-Use Grass and Weed Control with Pump N Go 5 L: PCP No. 33398, acetic acid 62.5 g/L. Product page
  • Roundup Advanced Concentrate 1 L: PCP No. 33586, ammonium soap of fatty acids at 22.10%. Product page

The ready-to-use Advanced labels describe the product as "For non-selective control of broadleaf and grassy weeds in and around the garden." Acetic acid is the acid in vinegar, which is where the common question "is Roundup Advanced just vinegar?" comes from; the registered spray has its own guarantee and its own label directions, and those are what you follow.

Which Roundup has the most glyphosate?

By the registered guarantee, Roundup Super Concentrate: 356 g of glyphosate per litre, against 143 g/L in Roundup Concentrate, 14.0 g/L in Tough Brush & Poison Ivy Control and 7 g/L in the other ready-to-use products. The two concentrates are diluted before use, though, so the guarantee is not the strength of what you spray.

Worked through from the label mix rates below: 50 mL of Super Concentrate carries about 17.8 g of glyphosate into roughly 2.55 L of spray, and 100 mL of Concentrate carries about 14.3 g into roughly 2.1 L. Both come out near 7 g per litre, about the same as the ready-to-use sprays. Tough Brush & Poison Ivy Control is sold ready to use at twice that, 14.0 g/L. The practical difference between the concentrates is how much spray a bottle makes: the labels say the 1 L Super Concentrate "TREATS 1,000 SQUARE METRES", the 1 L Concentrate "TREATS 400 SQUARE METRES" and the 500 mL Concentrate "TREATS 200 SQUARE METRES".

Roundup Super Concentrate vs Roundup Concentrate: the label mix rates

Roundup Super Concentrate (PCP No. 22759): "Mix 50 mL of product in 2.5 L of clean water (1 part Roundup, 50 parts water)." The label then says to "Apply prepared solution over equivalent of 50 square meters".

Roundup Concentrate (PCP No. 22627): "Mix 100 mL of product in 2 L of clean water (1 part Roundup, 20 parts water)." The label then says to "Apply prepared solution over equivalent of 40 square metres".

Both labels add "Mix only enough spray solution to treat intended area." and "Do not use hose-end sprayers."

Roundup Advanced Concentrate (PCP No. 33586) mixes differently: "Mix 200 mL of Roundup Advanced® Concentrate with 1 L water." and "Apply the mixed solution at 100-200 ml/m2."

The ready-to-use products are sold ready to spray. The Advanced ready-to-use label says "No dilution or mixing is required." and "For best results apply in sunny warm weather to actively growing young weeds less than 10 cm tall."

Ready-to-use, wand, FastAct Foam or Pump N Go?

These are formats more than formulas. The glyphosate ready-to-use products carry 7 g/L whether you buy the 1 L Non-Selective Herbicide with FastAct Foam, the 2 L Grass And Weed Control with FastAct Foam, or the 4 L size with a wand applicator (and its 4 L refill). Tough Brush & Poison Ivy Control comes in the same 4 L wand format at 14.0 g/L. On the Advanced side, the 1 L ready-to-use and the 5 L Pump N Go carry the same acetic acid guarantee, 62.5 g/L.

Rain, repeat sprays and replanting: what the labels say

Roundup Super Concentrate and Roundup Concentrate: "Rain or watering two hours after application will not wash away effectiveness." and "Do not apply if rainfall is forecast for the time of application." On timing: "Apply to annual weeds anytime after emergence. For perennial weeds apply after seed heads, flowers or berries appear." Before digging or planting: "Allow at least 3 days after treatment before disturbing the soil and/or replanting."

Roundup Advanced ready-to-use (1 L and Pump N Go): "Rainfall or watering within 1 hour of application will reduce degree of control." The Pump N Go label adds: "Retreatment of large weeds and regrowth of perennial weeds will be required."

Roundup Advanced Concentrate: "If rain falls within 3 hours of treatment, an additional spray may be required." and "Avoid application when heavy rain is forecast."

Can you use Roundup on a lawn?

Not to kill weeds in a lawn you want to keep. The five labels quoted here all describe non-selective products, and the glyphosate concentrate labels put it plainly: "Avoid spray contact on desirable plants as any plant contacted may be killed." Those labels do list "Lawn/Garden renovation", which means clearing an area to start over, with the note "For best results on lawns, skip one mowing prior to treatment."

For dandelions and other broadleaf weeds in turf you want to keep, look at a selective lawn weed control instead. Our Killex vs Roundup guide compares the two labels, and Killex Lawn Weed Control Concentrate is the concentrate it covers.

Brush, poison ivy and raspberry canes

Both glyphosate concentrate labels include brush control: "Apply after leaves are fully expanded. Treat trees and brush up to 1.5 m in height only; for taller plants cut down and spray regrowth." The brush they name is "Most brush such as Poplar, Alder, Maple and Raspberry". Poison ivy is in the weed list on both labels ("quackgrass, chickweed, ragweed, knotweed, poison ivy, Canada thistle, milkweed, bindweed"), and it is the named target of Roundup Ready-To-Use Tough Brush & Poison Ivy Control, the 14.0 g/L glyphosate product with a wand.

Precautions differ between the families

Each of the five labels quoted in this guide says "KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN". The glyphosate concentrate labels carry "CAUTION: EYE IRRITANT"; the Advanced ready-to-use labels carry "WARNING CORROSIVE EYE IRRITANT"; the Advanced Concentrate label carries "WARNING EYE IRRITANT" and says to "Wear goggles or faceshield (protective eyewear) during mixing/handling of the concentrate." Read the full precautions, first aid and disposal sections on the label before use.
