Details
Ortho Killex Lawn Weed Control Concentrate is a 1 L bottle of selective lawn herbicide that you dilute and apply with a hose-end or tank sprayer. It is registered under the Pest Control Products Act as PCP No. 27801, and its Health Canada label lists the active ingredients as 2,4-D 95 g a.e./L, mecoprop-P 52.52 g a.e./L and dicamba 9 g a.e./L, "all present as dimethylamine salt", and classes it as a Domestic product. The label says the 1 L bottle "COVERS 800 SQUARE METRES (8,800 SQ. FT.)". Application, from the label: "Use with the Scotts® Dial ‘N Spray® Hose-End Sprayer or any standard hand-held or backpack sprayer." For the hose-end sprayer: "Set the dial on the Dial ‘N Spray® applicator to 6 and follow label directions." For hand-held or backpack sprayers: "Mix 6 mL of concentrate in 1 litre of water to treat 5 square metres (50 square feet)." On timing: "This product is only effective when applied to the leaves of actively growing weeds." and "DO NOT apply more than two broadcast applications per season." It also says "DO NOT water within 24 hours after application. Do not apply when rain is expected." and "Do not apply to newly seeded lawns until after 3rd mowing." Killex is a selective lawn herbicide: it is labelled for weeds growing in turf, not for vegetable or flower beds, and the manufacturer notes it is not available in all provinces. It is regulated as a pesticide by Health Canada, so read the full label before use, keep it off desirable broadleaf plants and follow the label's directions, re-entry and disposal instructions. Which lawn weeds is Killex labelled for? The label's list begins "dandelions, fall dandelion (fall hawkbit), plantain" and runs to more than 50 weeds, including clover, chickweed, ground ivy (creeping Charlie), Canada thistle, bindweed (field) and speedwell (purslane leaved); our guide "What weeds does Killex control? The full label list, creeping Charlie to thistle" reproduces it in full. The label also limits where it goes: "Do not use on bentgrass varieties (golf greens)." and "Desirable broadleaf terrestrial plants can be harmed by contact with product spray." Where weeds are only in patches, it says to "consider spot treatments that target only weedy areas." Is Killex legal in Alberta? Killex is registered federally by Health Canada (PCP 27801) and is sold for lawn use in Alberta. Health Canada explains that "provinces and territories can create laws about property, civil rights, and matters of local interest. This includes creating cosmetic pesticide bans to prevent the use of some pesticides," and that "cities, towns, and municipalities may be given the power by provinces and territories to regulate how pesticides are used locally." Several provinces restrict lawn ("cosmetic") use of 2,4-D products such as Killex, so Health Canada advises: "To see if there is a ban on lawn pesticides where you live, contact your province, city, or town." Check your own province or municipality before ordering.
