Details
An open bag in a shed is a rodent invitation and a moisture problem at the same time. Feed draws damp up off the floor, mice find it inside a week, and by the end of the month you are throwing out the bottom third of something you paid good money for. This drum takes 64 L (17 gallons), which works out to roughly 36 kg (80 lb) of most feeds. The lid locks down with stainless steel handles and seals against the rim, and that seal is what makes it rodent-resistant rather than merely covered. A lid resting on top is not a barrier to anything with teeth. It will not rust and it will not fade, which is more relevant than it sounds for something living in an unheated shed and opened twice a day. Plastic also means no sharp rim to catch your hand on when you are scooping out the last of it. Keep the rim clean. Feed dust on a sealing surface is the usual reason a lid stops sealing properly, and a lid that only nearly closes is the same as no lid at all.
