Twenty birds of the same breed are twenty identical birds. You cannot remember which one you were watching, which came out of which hatch, or which hen belongs to which breeding pen, and by the second week you have stopped trying. A coloured ring on the leg makes the flock legible again. There are a hundred rings in the pack in a mix of colours, in the small size for bantams, younger birds and lighter breeds. Colour is the whole system: one colour per hatch, per pen or per line, and you can read the flock from across the run without catching anything. The habit worth building is writing the key down and putting it somewhere permanent. A colour system you keep in your head lasts about one season. Taped inside the feed room door, it lasts as long as the birds do. Check the fit as birds grow. Small rings are sized for small legs, and a bird that has put on frame since you ringed it needs the ring moved up a size. Make a point of looking at legs when you handle birds for anything else.
