Details
There comes a point in every flock where you need to know which hen is which. Which pullets came from which hatch, which bird you have been watching, which ones are going and which are staying. From ten feet away, twenty barred rocks look identical. These are plastic C-shaped bands that spring open and snap around the leg, supplied a hundred to a pack in mixed colours. Medium is the middle of a three-size range, so for standard laying breeds it is usually the right pick. Leg thickness varies a good deal between breeds and between males and females, though, so it is worth fitting one to a bird before you band the whole flock. The system only works if you write down what the colours mean. A colour without a note is just a coloured ring. Keep it simple, one colour per hatch year or one colour per pen, and put the list somewhere it will not blow away. Check banded birds as they grow, particularly young stock. A band that fit a pullet in August can be tight by the time she is in full lay, and they are meant to come off as easily as they went on.
