Once a flock is past a dozen, birds stop being individuals. You cannot remember which hen you were watching last week, which one came out of which hatch, or which one you meant to keep back. A coloured leg ring settles that in a second and keeps settling it for the life of the bird. This is a hundred rings in the large size, supplied in assorted colours. The usual system is one colour per hatch or per year, which lets you read a bird's age off its leg from across the run without catching it, and a second colour on the other leg for anything you have singled out for a reason. Fit them once birds have finished growing and glance at them now and then. A ring that sat right on a pullet can end up snug on a mature hen, and swapping up takes a moment. They come off and go back on again, so a hundred rings goes a long way over several seasons.
