Open water in a coop is a losing battle. It collects shavings, dust and droppings within hours, and somebody has to dump and refill it every single day. A nipple system puts the water out of reach: birds drink from the nipple, nothing gets into the bucket, and the refill interval goes from daily to whenever it runs low. The body is square, holds five gallons, and measures about 29 by 29 cm with a height of 25 cm (11.5 by 11.5 by 10 inches). Six mini nipples are fitted along the bottom, which gives enough drinking points for a decent backyard flock, and it comes with a lid to keep debris and light out of the reservoir. The square shape is doing real work. It sits flat against a wall instead of rolling away from it, and it stacks on a shelf better than a round pail. Hang it or stand it on a block so the nipples sit at about head height for the birds. Too low and they will not use it properly, too high and the smaller ones cannot reach. Nipples are the part to watch when it turns cold, since that is where any system like this stops first. Through the summer a rinse and a refill every week or two is usually all it asks for.
