Forty gallons is the size most small operations settle on. It carries a couple of horses or a handful of cattle through a hot day, but the water turns over fast enough that it does not sit and go green between cleanings, and when it is empty one person can still walk it to a new spot. Outside measurements are about 97 by 69 by 33 cm (38 by 27 by 13 inches), holding 40 gallons or roughly 151 litres. The oval shape means a longer drinking edge than a round tank of the same volume, so two animals can use it at once without shouldering each other. The material is recycled low-density polyethylene, which handles freeze and thaw without the cracking you get from rigid plastics. There is no drain plug in this size. Tipping 40 gallons is a job but not an impossible one, and most people run it down before they turn it over. Set it on level ground or a bit of packed gravel rather than in a low spot. A tank sitting in the mud it created is harder to move and harder to keep clean, and the flat moulded base only helps if there is something firm under it.
