Full-size stock tanks are the wrong shape for young or small animals. A tall wall means a calf either cannot reach or gets into trouble trying. This tank is deliberately shallow at about 20 cm (8 in) tall, which puts the water where a small animal can get at it and makes it easy to see at a glance how much is left. The footprint is roughly 71 by 56 cm (28 by 22 in), so it fits in a pen corner or a creep area without taking the floor. The oval shape sheds a knock better than a square corner does, and the moulded rim gives it enough rigidity to be dragged a short distance. This size has no drain plug, so you tip it, which at 57 L (15 US gallons) is entirely manageable for one person. Water is not the only use. Shallow oval tanks end up holding soaked feed, root vegetables, cut flowers at a market stall and wash water for boots. The polyethylene is non-reactive, so it does not much care what goes in it. The dimensions are outside measurements and the manufacturer allows a variance of 25 to 40 mm (1 to 1.5 in) between mouldings, so measure the actual tank before you build a frame around it.
