There is a reason the wooden mouse trap has barely changed in a hundred years. It costs almost nothing, it kills instantly, and it leaves no poison in the house and no poisoned mouse for a cat or an owl to eat. Many people prefer them precisely because they are disposable — you throw the whole trap out with the mouse and never have to handle anything. Set them tight against a wall with the trigger end facing the wall, in the corners and behind the appliances and boxes where you have found droppings or gnaw marks. Mice travel along edges and under cover and live in surprisingly small territories, so a trap thirty seconds' walk from where the mouse actually lives may as well not exist. Concentrate several traps in the active spot rather than putting one in each room. Bait light. A pea-sized dab of peanut butter pressed into the trigger is ideal, because a mouse has to work at it rather than carrying it off. Chocolate, bacon and dried fruit all work, and in winter a wisp of cotton or dental floss as nesting material can out-perform food. Unlike rats, mice are not particularly wary of new objects, so you can set traps on the first night and expect results. If nothing is caught in two or three nights, the traps are in the wrong place — move them rather than changing bait. Watch your fingers when setting them, and keep them out of reach of children, dogs and cats. Check them daily, and dispose of catches with gloves on. Then find the entry point and close it, because as long as there is a pencil-width gap into a building with feed in it, there will be more mice.
