Manes and tails take a beating over an Alberta winter. Rubbed against gate posts, packed with mud, thinned out at the dock by spring. This is the bottle a lot of people keep on the grooming shelf for exactly that stretch of the year, worked into the hair at the base of the mane and along the tail bone. The formula dates to 1938 and has not changed much since. It is sulphur carried in a mineral oil base, with cade oil, glycerin and zinc stearate. The ingredients separate in the bottle, so it needs a hard shake before every use. This is the 236 ml size, a sensible amount if you are using it on one or two horses rather than a string. A little goes a long way. Rub a small amount into the hair or coat with your fingers or a cloth and leave it; there is no need to rinse between applications. For manes and tails, most people work it in weekly. It is an oil, so it will mark clothing and stall walls, and it carries a strong smell that some people like and some do not. When you want it out, a wash with a degreasing horse shampoo takes it off. Store the bottle upright somewhere it will not tip, and keep the cap on tight, because spilled oil on a shelf is a long clean-up.
