Straight glucosamine hydrochloride, nothing else in the pail. The case for a single-ingredient product is control: you know exactly how many grams of glucosamine the horse is getting, you are not paying for filler or for a token amount of something else, and if you are already feeding MSM or a hoof supplement you are not doubling up blindly. Glucosamine is a precursor the body uses in building cartilage and joint fluid components, and it is the most-studied joint supplement ingredient in horses. The research is genuinely mixed — some studies show a benefit, others do not, and oral absorption is one of the ongoing questions. What is fairly consistent is that if it works for a particular horse, it works at an adequate dose fed consistently. Underdosing is the most common reason people conclude joint supplements do nothing, and it is why the grams per serving on the label matter more than the marketing. Feed at the label rate daily, in feed that gets cleaned up. Give it a full six to eight weeks before judging, and if there is no honest difference, stop. Two limits. Glucosamine HCL and glucosamine sulphate are not identical products and the research does not treat them as interchangeable, so compare labels rather than assuming. And no supplement substitutes for diagnosis — a lame horse, a hot or filled joint, or a horse that has dropped off in performance needs a veterinary lameness exam, where the real answer may be rest, medication or an injection.
