Thiamine, or vitamin B1, in a crumble that mixes readily into feed. Horses normally make their own B vitamins through hindgut fermentation, so a healthy horse on good forage rarely needs supplemental thiamine. Where it comes up is in horses whose hindgut function is disrupted — after antibiotics, on a heavy grain ration, off feed, or under sustained stress — and in horses grazing bracken fern or similar plants that interfere with thiamine. Thiamine is also widely sold and fed as a calming supplement, and that is worth being straight about. The evidence for oral thiamine calming a horse is thin. Some owners are convinced by it, controlled studies are unimpressive, and the effect that people notice may have as much to do with a change in routine as with the vitamin. It is inexpensive, it is water soluble, and surplus is excreted rather than stored, so it is not a risky thing to try — just do not expect much. Feed at the label rate, daily, mixed into feed the horse will finish. As with anything nutritional, consistency matters more than the size of a single dose. A horse with real behavioural or neurological problems needs a veterinary look, not a vitamin. Sudden difficulty is far more often pain, ulcers, teeth or eyesight than a B vitamin shortfall.
