The 7 kg size of the B12 and folic acid crumble, for a barn running several horses on it or one horse fed year-round. At this volume the cost per day drops considerably compared with the small pail, which is the whole reason to step up. Feed daily at the label rate. B12 and folic acid work together in red blood cell production, and because both are water soluble the horse excretes surplus rather than storing it — so the value is in feeding it steadily through a working season, not in loading a big dose ahead of an event. Where it earns its place is with horses in work, young horses growing, and horses rebuilding after a hard winter, illness or a period off feed. It is worth remembering that B12 production depends on cobalt and on a functioning hindgut, so horses on poor forage or recovering from gut upset are the most plausible candidates. Where it does not earn its place is as an explanation for every dull horse. Before deciding a horse needs blood support, get a fecal egg count, have the teeth looked at, and count the actual calories going in — parasites, dental pain and plain underfeeding account for most flat horses. Genuine anaemia needs a veterinary diagnosis, because something is causing it. Storage matters with a pail this size: sealed lid, off the concrete, out of the damp, scoop kept inside. Crumbles that pick up moisture set solid and get thrown out.
