Foam is the safer of the two ways to deal with a nest. It shoots as a stream from a distance, and once it lands it expands and clings, sealing the nest entrance and holding insecticide against the nest surface instead of dripping off. That matters because the wasps inside cannot get out past it, and the ones returning to the nest contact it on the way in. Do it at night or in the very early morning. That is not a nicety — it is the whole technique. Wasps are inside the nest and inactive when it is cold and dark, and a nest hit at midday sends a large number of angry insects toward whatever is closest. Use a flashlight with a red filter or set it on the ground pointing at the nest rather than holding it, because they will fly at the light. Plan your exit before you spray, stand back at the range the label specifies, aim at the opening, and leave. Do not stand there admiring your work. Never spray upward while standing under a nest, never use a ladder for this, and leave anything high, inside a wall, or in the ground to someone equipped for it. If anyone in the household is allergic to stings, hire it out — this is not the place to save money. Read the label for approved sites, distance and re-entry. Aerosols are flammable and must never be sprayed near flame or a hot light fixture. Check the nest again in daylight the next day and re-treat if there is activity. And bear in mind that wasps do real good eating pest insects — a nest well away from foot traffic is often best left alone until frost kills it.
