Details
Ortho Killex Ready-To-Use Lawn Weed Control is a 709 mL trigger-spray bottle of the selective lawn herbicide, pre-mixed for spot-treating individual weeds in turf. Its label calls it a "WATER-BASED LIQUID SPRAY", says "This product is designed to target treatment of weedy areas of lawns." and lists the weeds it is for: "Dandelions, Plantains, Chickweed, Clover, Bedstraw, Black Medick, English Daisy, Curled Dock, Heal-all, Ground Ivy (Creeping Charlie), Knotweed, Ragweed, Shepherd's-Purse, plus over 35 other lawn weeds." On timing: "This product is only effective when applied to the leaves of actively growing weeds." The label also cautions: "This product may injure bentgrass." On the Health Canada label (PCP Registration No. 27800) the guarantee lists 2,4-D 1.9 g a.e./L, Mecoprop-P 1.05 g a.e./L and Dicamba 0.18 g a.e./L, all present as dimethylamine salt. The label directs: "Adjust nozzle to give coarse, wet stream. Aim at weed; pull trigger. Only short burst necessary." and "DO NOT water within 24 hours after application. Rain within 6 hours reduces effectiveness." Killex is a selective lawn herbicide: it is labelled for weeds growing in turf, not for vegetable or flower beds, and the manufacturer notes it is not available in all provinces. It is regulated as a pesticide by Health Canada, so read the full label before use, keep it off desirable broadleaf plants and follow the label's directions, re-entry and disposal instructions. Is Killex legal in Alberta? Killex products are registered federally by Health Canada and are sold for lawn use in Alberta. Health Canada explains that "provinces and territories can create laws about property, civil rights, and matters of local interest. This includes creating cosmetic pesticide bans to prevent the use of some pesticides," and that "cities, towns, and municipalities may be given the power by provinces and territories to regulate how pesticides are used locally." Several provinces restrict lawn ("cosmetic") use of 2,4-D products such as Killex, so Health Canada advises: "To see if there is a ban on lawn pesticides where you live, contact your province, city, or town." Check your own province or municipality before ordering. Where to buy Killex Ready-To-Use in Alberta: Pipestone Farm Supply sells the 709 mL trigger bottle from its store in Millet, Alberta (between Leduc and Wetaskiwin, south of Edmonton) and ships it Canada-wide where the product is registered for sale. Order online for in-store pickup or delivery. For a whole lawn, the 1 L Ortho Killex Concentrate covers 800 m² once diluted; the 4 L Ready-To-Use jug with a wand covers larger spot-treatment jobs.
