Details

Diatomaceous earth kills insects mechanically rather than chemically. It is a fine, abrasive mineral dust that damages the waxy outer layer of an insect's body so it loses moisture and dries out. Because there is no nervous-system target, there is no resistance to it — and resistance is exactly the problem with bed bugs, which have become insensitive to several of the insecticides that used to work on them. The trade-off is speed: this is slow, taking days rather than minutes. The aerosol format matters. Dust straight out of a bag is difficult to place and easy to over-apply, and a thick layer of visible dust is actually less effective because insects walk around it. The aerosol lays a thin film into the places bed bugs hide: mattress seams and tufts, bed frame joints, headboard fastenings, baseboard gaps, behind outlet covers, and the cracks in furniture. Thin and thorough beats heavy and obvious. Be realistic about bed bugs. They are among the hardest household pests to eliminate, they hide in dozens of places in a room, and a partial treatment simply moves them. A serious infestation genuinely warrants a professional, and heat treatment of bedding and clothing is a major part of any successful program. Dust is one component, best used in the voids a spray cannot reach and left in place. Read the label for approved sites and application. Avoid breathing the dust — use a mask while applying and ventilate afterward — and keep it out of eyes. Keep the can away from flame and heat, store upright and out of reach of children.
