Some labels call for the injection to go under the hide rather than into muscle, and the needle has to change with it. The Sub-Q line is Medi-Dart's answer. It carries the same ridge grading as the IM needles, but the shaft is drilled so the charge leaves through two holes in the side as well as the solid tip. The #4 sits at the heavier end of the middle of the ridge range. Medi-Dart numbers needles from #2 to #6 purely by how rough the ridge is, and a rougher ridge holds more firmly while the pressurised barrel empties. If the lighter grades have been letting darts back out early on you, this is the direction to move rather than a different system. It is reusable hardware. Medi-Dart puts a needle at roughly thirty injections behind the crossbow and roughly fifty on the extension pole syringe, and the point can be brought back with a file. Rinse and dry it after use, pay attention to the side ports at cleaning time, and retire the needle once the ridge has worn smooth. Fits the crossbow dart and the extension pole syringe. Which route suits the animal and the product in front of you is a decision for your veterinarian and the label. The needle only determines how the charge leaves the barrel, not what should go in it.
