The extension pole version of the Medi-Dart is the one you use when the animal will let you get within a few metres but not into a chute. The syringe rides on the end of a telescoping pole, and this is the nut that makes that joint. It is not the same part as the small nut that holds the needle onto the barrel. That confusion costs people an order more often than anything else in the parts list, so check which one you are actually short of before buying. This is the connecting nut, specific to the extension setup, and it has no equivalent role on the crossbow dart. The joint it makes takes a real load. When you poke the animal firmly and immediately pull the pole back, as Medi-Dart instructs, everything at that junction is loaded in two directions in quick succession. A nut with worn or crossed threads will work loose at exactly the wrong moment, and there is no good time to have a syringe come off a pole in the middle of a bunch of cattle. Treat it as a reusable part rather than a consumable, but inspect the threads when you strip the syringe down to clean it, and replace it once it stops running up smoothly by hand. Keep it snug rather than cranked tight. Treatment decisions stay with your veterinarian and the label of whatever you are administering.
