Plenty of crossbows in this country are older than the parts Medi-Dart now ships with them, and they still shoot fine. What has changed is the needle and wingnut arrangement at the front of the dart, which was redesigned for better penetration and a cleaner eject. This kit is how an existing crossbow gets there without replacing the whole outfit. The kit carries two needles, a #5 and a #6, along with both wingnuts: 13 mm (1/2 in) and 9.5 mm (3/8 in). Between them that covers the range of cattle most operations run, with the larger wingnut suiting cows and bulls and the smaller one working on younger cattle up to yearlings. The #6 is the newer needle and the rougher of the two ridges. One thing to confirm before you order. The #6 needle needs the half-moon push rod to eject correctly, so if your dart is still fitted with the plain push rod you will want that part as well. The #5 in the kit will run either way, which makes it a useful fallback while you sort the rest out. This is crossbow equipment. If you are running the extension pole syringe instead, the equivalent conversion is the extension kit for the #6 needle rather than this one. The needles and wingnuts are reusable parts, and as always the treatment decisions behind the hardware belong with your veterinarian and the product label.
