Medi-Dart push rod (MDPR)
Standard replacement push rod for Medi-Dart syringes, the part that drives the ejector loop and frees the needle after the barrel empties.

Every Medi-Dart shot ends the same way. The air behind the plunger runs out of barrel to empty, the push rod drives the ejector loop ahead, the needle is forced back out of the animal and the syringe drops to the ground. If the rod is bent, worn or missing, that last step does not happen and you are chasing an animal with your equipment still attached to it. This is the standard push rod, the plain rod as originally supplied. It suits the needle grades that do not depend on the newer arrangement. The current #6 needle is the exception: it is designed around the half-moon push rod, which is a separate part, so this rod is not the one to buy if you are converting a dart to the #6. Rods are cheap and they take abuse. Between the impact of the shot, the drop to the ground and being retrieved off frozen or stony ground, they get knocked about, and a rod that has taken a slight set will push unevenly. Take a look at it every time you strip the syringe for cleaning. It is a reusable component rather than a consumable, but it is one of the few parts worth keeping a spare of in the case alongside a couple of o-rings. Nothing here changes the fact that treatment choices belong with your veterinarian and the label of the product being given.
